Week 11 & 12

Over the last few weeks we have been exposed to some very timely and contemporary social justice topics including; abortion, indigenous health, racial profiling within various social institutions, gender based violence, and gender identity. Choose one of these areas to investigate further. Provide connections to a real-world example or context of how your chosen issue manifests currently in society, by identifying a policy, practice or law that explicitly (whether intentionally or not) discriminates or presents a barrier for your affected group. Consider the various stakeholders and the impacts of the issue, as well as solutions or cases of best practice that we can perhaps draw from.

Week 9 & 10

This leads us into some topics we will discuss this week; cultural appropriation. When is it crossing the line between honoring and celebrating a cultural and appropriating it....? Provide some examples of institutional cultural appropriation and examples of cultural appreciation. You can think about it in the context of multiculturalism? School communities? Fashion? And how should we be challenging these

On November 11th we Remember - all of those who have fought and lost their lives, and all of those who continue to fight for our freedom. Share some of your new learning related to the group whose contributions to war and remembrance you researched? What did you learn? What surprised you?

Sexual Harassment in the workplace can affect us in different ways, it's a preventable problem, but until it's eliminated completely we need to know what to do in the event of such treatment. What are the policies at your own workplace for reporting harassment? What about the post-secondary institution that you may be considering next year? (research one schools policy and report on it in your Blog).

We will be looking at representations of equity seeking groups and issues as we move through the second half of the course. Sophie & Kaelyn did a great job at framing this issue from the perspective of 'tokenism'. What other representations of equity seeking groups appear to be tokenistic? Consider media and in particular advertising? Choose and equity seeking group and identify at least one example of tokenistic representation and another example that is authentic and respectful to that group or identity (ie; not tokenistic).
